Falsely accused of rape and threats to kill, our client faced life-shattering charges. But with sharp defence work, hidden truths unraveled in court. The jury returned a unanimous not guilty on all counts.

This was a case where severe charges were involved. Our client was accused of three counts of rape and making threats to kill. The accusations came after the breakdown of a marriage, during which our client had moved on and stopped providing the same level of financial support, having left the family home.

Once we took over the case, our defence solicitors immediately began scrutinising the evidence being relied upon by the prosecution. The complainant had accused our client of serious offences, including threats to kill and rape, and had provided police with selective screenshots of messages which, at face value, appeared to show controlling behaviour. However, it quickly became clear that these were carefully chosen extracts. We discovered that she had refused to provide her own phone for download, raising immediate concerns about what might be withheld. This did not deter our team of experienced defence solicitors—we obtained a full download of our client’s phone, which painted a very different picture. The messages revealed manipulation from the complainant, including statements like, “I do things to make you angry,” which pointed to a motive rooted in bitterness and emotional retaliation. The broader context cast serious doubt on the allegations of rape and threats to kill, ultimately strengthening our client’s defence.

Our criminal defence solicitors went further by requesting her bank records, which clearly showed that our client had been providing significant financial support. Rather than being used for necessities, the funds were being spent on luxury items such as perfumes and jewellery—undermining her claim of hardship. We also reviewed her video-recorded interview, where several inconsistencies became clear. One of the most serious was her claim that she had discovered a covert camera hidden under the pillows, alleging that our client had placed it there to secretly watch her at all times. This was presented to support her claim of coercive and controlling behaviour —common accusations in rape and threats to kill cases. She also claimed that a friend had been with her at the time and had heard a call in which our client supposedly admitted to it. However, when police contacted the witness, they denied ever being present. Despite this contradiction, the police continued to rely on her version of events.

Or defence solicitors took steps to obtain a formal witness statement, and the individual confirmed she had only known the complainant for a short period and was not present during the alleged incident. This helped expose serious flaws in the prosecution’s case.

Following an eight-day trial, the jury returned a unanimous not guilty verdict on all charges. Our client was fully acquitted of three counts of rape and threats to kill.
